Mayor Marty Small Sr. and his wife La’Quetta Small were indicted on charges related to the alleged abuse of their teenage daughter, which occurred between December 2023 and January. The Mayor’s attorney, Ed Jacobs, maintains that the Smalls are innocent and will be vindicated. The abuse included physical and emotional abuse, with one incident on Jan. 13 where the mayor allegedly hit his daughter with a broom causing her to lose consciousness. The mayor also threatened his daughter during an argument on Jan. 3, and prosecutors allege that he punched her repeatedly in the legs during another incident. La’Quetta Small, who is the superintendent of Atlantic City Public Schools, is accused of hitting her daughter multiple times, dragging her by her hair, and punching her in the mouth during an argument. The allegations came to light after the girl disclosed the abuse to a school employee when she circled the “neutral” face on an “exit ticket” with the word “abuse” written on the back. The girl’s boyfriend provided investigators with videos showing her injuries, and medical records indicated she was hospitalized for a head injury. The school district has not commented on the allegations. The mayor’s office has directed inquiries to his attorney and maintains that the allegations are a private family matter.
