Dozens of people were injured by new explosions that occurred in Lebanon on Wednesday, as reported by Reuters. The explosions, targeting walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah, come just a day after a similar attack using pagers injured over 2,800 people and killed 12. UN Secretary General António Guterres warned of the risk of escalation, while the US issued new sanctions targeting individuals tied to Iran’s repression of its people. The explosions appeared to be coordinated, with handheld radios being the devices targeted. At least one blast occurred near a Hezbollah funeral for the victims of the previous day’s explosions. In Gaza, an Israeli airstrike on a school building killed five people, with Israel claiming it targeted Hamas militants within the building. The EU and Ireland’s foreign minister condemned the attacks in Lebanon, calling for accountability and de-escalation. Hungary’s involvement in producing pagers linked to the explosions is under scrutiny. Egypt confirmed Hamas’ commitment to a ceasefire agreement. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated progress in negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, although three paragraphs are yet to be agreed upon. Blinken also mentioned that the US is still gathering facts about the explosions in Lebanon and urged all parties to avoid actions that could escalate the conflict.
