North Korea launches short-range ballistic missiles for second time within a week

North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles towards its east coast, following the unveiling of a uranium enrichment facility and a vow to enhance its nuclear arsenal. The missiles were launched from Kaechon, with South Korea and Japan condemning the provocation and warning of overwhelming responses to further actions. Japan reported that at least one missile fell near North Korea’s eastern inland coast, with the U.S. closely consulting with Seoul and Tokyo.

This recent missile test comes after North Korea fired several short-range missiles last week, which it described as a test of a new multiple launch rocket system. South Korea suggested that the launch may have been to test weapons for export to Russia, as the two countries have been increasing their military cooperation. The United States, South Korea, and Ukraine have accused North Korea of supplying rockets and missiles to Russia for use in the conflict in Ukraine.

North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui visited Russia this week for conferences promoting bilateral ties, meeting with her Russian counterpart to discuss ways to strengthen relations. The missile launches also followed a showcase of centrifuges producing fuel for North Korea’s nuclear weapons, with leader Kim Jong Un calling for more weapons-grade material to expand their arsenal. These developments highlight increased tensions in the region due to North Korea’s ongoing missile tests and nuclear ambitions.
