Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week, calling him “fantastic” while also criticizing India as a “very big abuser” when it comes to trade policies with the U.S. Trump did not provide further details on the meeting, and the Indian Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
As president, Trump visited India in 2020 to boost trade ties, making the U.S. India’s second-largest trading partner after China. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from Sept. 21 to 23, attending the Quad Leaders’ Summit and speaking before the United Nations General Assembly in New York. This will be Modi’s first visit to the U.S. since winning a historic third term in office in June.
During Modi’s last state visit to Washington in June 2023, the U.S. and India signed technology and defense deals, strengthening bilateral relations. The U.S. Department of State recently announced a partnership with India to improve the global semiconductor value chain, showcasing the potential to expand India’s semiconductor industry for the benefit of both nations. The collaboration highlights the deepening cooperation between the U.S. and India in various sectors, marking a new era of bilateral relations.
