Federal law enforcement agencies have confirmed that Iranians sent unsolicited emails containing stolen material from former President Donald Trump’s campaign to people connected to his Democratic rival, now-President Joe Biden. The emails were an attempt to undermine confidence in the electoral process. The FBI is tracking ongoing attempts by Iranian hackers to transmit stolen material to media organizations. There are growing concerns about foreign interference in the upcoming elections, particularly from Russia, Iran, and China. The Trump campaign has accused Iranians of trying to help Vice President Kamala Harris, alleging that she was illegally spying on Trump. Harris’s campaign spokesperson denied any direct receipt of stolen material and stated that staff targeted by the emails may not have realized their content. Google’s Threat Analysis Group previously reported that an Iranian hacker group targeted both the Trump and Biden-Harris campaigns in a phishing operation. The Justice Department plans to file criminal charges related to the hacking of Trump’s campaign, although Iran has denied involvement. The Justice Department previously indicted Iranians for meddling in the 2020 presidential election. The efforts by foreign entities to interfere in U.S. elections highlight the importance of protecting the integrity of the electoral process.
