AMG Lithium has opened Europe’s first lithium refinery in Bitterfeld-Wolfen, Germany, at a cost of 140 million euros. The refinery is expected to produce 20,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide per year, enough to power 500,000 electric vehicles. Most of the lithium will come from Brazil, but in the future, European sources will also be utilized. Lithium is a crucial component in EV batteries, and the refinery aims to reduce Europe’s dependency on external supply sources. The EU’s Critical Raw Materials Action Plan in 2020 highlighted the importance of securing a local supply of lithium. Managing Director Stefan Scherer emphasized the unbeatable performance and range of lithium-ion batteries in EVs. The refinery’s construction was completed in just over two years, showcasing AMG Lithium’s dedication to meeting the increasing demand for lithium as the world shifts towards green energy. This new facility marks a significant step towards creating a sustainable supply chain for lithium in Europe, supporting the growing EV market and contributing to the global transition to cleaner energy sources. With the ability to power hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles each year, the AMG Lithium refinery is poised to play a key role in shaping the future of electric mobility in Europe and beyond.
