United Nations officials, including heads of agencies like the World Food Programme and UNICEF, have issued a plea for an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip. As world leaders gathered for the UN General Assembly in New York, the officials expressed their inability to do their jobs effectively due to the overwhelming need and ongoing violence in Gaza.
The UN has faced obstacles in delivering aid to Gaza during the conflict between Israel and Hamas, with nearly 300 humanitarian aid workers, including UN staff, killed. The officials highlighted the urgent need for food and livelihood assistance for all 2.1 million residents in Gaza, emphasizing that the risk of famine persists due to restricted humanitarian access.
The Health Ministry in Gaza reported at least 24 people killed and 60 wounded in Israeli military attacks within a 24-hour period. Al Jazeera’s reporting paints a grim picture of the increasingly desperate conditions in Gaza, attributing them to the intense bombing campaign by the Israeli military.
The war, which began in October 2023, has resulted in numerous casualties and the displacement of almost the entire population in Gaza. The conflict has created a situation of deadly hunger and disease, with Palestinian authorities reporting over 41,400 people killed by Israeli military actions. The officials’ call for an end to the suffering in Gaza reflects the urgent need for humanitarian intervention to address the dire situation in the region.
