Biden administration grants UAE ‘major defense partner’ designation in unusual decision | Latest news on Joe Biden

The United States and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have strengthened their military cooperation, with President Joe Biden recognising the UAE as a “major defence partner” during a meeting with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. This designation will enhance defense cooperation in the Middle East, East Africa, and the Indian Ocean regions, allowing for joint training and collaboration between the militaries of the two countries.

Despite tensions over conflicts in Sudan and Gaza, the UAE has been a vocal critic of Israel’s attacks on Gaza and has put forward resolutions condemning the war in the UN Security Council. The UAE has also been accused of supplying weapons to forces involved in the conflict in Sudan, which has caused significant displacement and suffering.

During the meeting, Biden and Al Nahyan discussed the need for humanitarian aid in Gaza and the path to stabilisation and recovery in the region, including a commitment to the two-state solution for Israel and Palestine. Both leaders emphasised that there can be no military solution to the conflict in Sudan and stressed the importance of compliance with international humanitarian law by all parties involved.

In another meeting with US Vice President Kamala Harris, concerns about the conflict in Sudan were raised, highlighting the displacement of millions of individuals and the atrocities committed against civilians. Despite these challenges, both countries remain committed to enhancing regional stability and working towards peaceful resolutions to conflicts in the Middle East.
