Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed optimism that the war with Russia is nearing an end, calling on allies to strengthen Ukraine’s army. Zelenskyy’s comments came during a visit to the US to attend the UN general assembly and present a “victory plan” to US leaders. After meeting with members of the US Congress, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of decisive action to end Russian aggression against Ukraine. He also held talks with leaders from Germany, India, and Japan to shore up support for Kyiv’s war efforts.
Meanwhile, a commission mandated by the UN rights council reported that jails controlled by Russia are withholding medical care for Ukrainian prisoners and engaging in torture. Russian forces continue to launch strikes on Ukrainian cities, with casualties reported in Zaporizhzhia and Vuhledar. Despite denials, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that Russia is receiving new weapons, including Iranian missiles.
In the midst of these developments, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump suggested that Zelenskyy may prefer a Democratic victory in the upcoming US election. Trump expressed his intent to call for a deal to end the war if he were to win. Zelenskyy remains committed to seeking a peaceful resolution to the conflict and maintaining unity with allies. The situation in Ukraine continues to be closely monitored as efforts to end the war are ongoing.
