Former Orange County prosecutor Stewart Rosenwasser died by suicide as FBI agents arrived to arrest him for bribery charges. An indictment alleged that Rosenwasser accepted $63,000 in bribes while serving as a chief counsel and executive assistant district attorney. When the FBI arrived at his home, Rosenwasser allegedly pointed a gun at agents and was shot before barricading himself and taking his own life. The FBI’s Inspection Division is reviewing the incident. Rosenwasser was accused of using his position to benefit a co-defendant, a self-proclaimed millionaire and former restaurant owner. The co-defendant allegedly paid Rosenwasser through various means from November 2022 to May 2024. Rosenwasser tried to conceal his actions by lying to senior leadership at the district attorney’s office. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York declined to comment. Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler expressed sadness over the situation. Rosenwasser had received awards during his time in the district attorney’s office but resigned quietly in June before the indictment was unsealed.
