Tracking the Path, Forecast, and Status of Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region as a Category 4 storm, with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph. It weakened to a Category 1 as it moved across Georgia, but the threat of life-threatening storm surge, winds, and heavy rain persisted. Helene could bring a wind swath over 400 miles wide and “unsurvivable” storm surge. States including Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina declared emergencies ahead of the storm. Flooding is a concern in several of these states. Helene started as a tropical storm in the western Caribbean Sea, causing flooding in the Cayman Islands before intensifying into a powerful hurricane.
