The government of Nepal has deployed more than 3,000 security personnel to assist in rescue efforts as the country faces devastating floods and landslides. At least 32 people have been killed and 12 others are missing due to the incessant rains that have caused rivers to overflow and landslides to block highways. The capital, Kathmandu, is among the areas heavily affected by the natural disasters.
Authorities are warning of possible flash floods in multiple rivers, and efforts are being made to rescue and find the missing individuals. Domestic flights out of Kathmandu have been cancelled, affecting more than 150 departures, but international flights are still operating. Police are also working to clear debris and reopen roads that have been blocked by landslides.
Weather forecasting officials predict that the heavy rains may continue until Sunday morning before the weather clears up. The Koshi River, which often causes deadly floods in India’s state of Bihar, is running above the danger level, adding to the challenges faced by the region.
Experts attribute the increased frequency and intensity of rain-related disasters in Nepal to climate change. This year alone, more than 170 people have been killed in such incidents. The government and various agencies are working tirelessly to rescue those affected by the floods and landslides, while also urging caution and preparedness in the face of ongoing natural calamities.
