Elon Musk’s X platform is once again up and running in Brazil after a standoff with the country’s federal supreme court minister, Alexandre de Moraes. The platform was suspended in August after Musk refused to comply with court orders to ban certain user accounts or remove content that violated federal laws. Brazil has strict internet regulations to limit hate speech, incitements to violence, and political misinformation online. Musk initially closed X’s headquarters in Brazil and refused to employ a legal representative there. However, under pressure from investors and the threat of daily fines, X eventually complied with Brazilian law. During the suspension, competitors gained millions of users in Brazil. Users were able to access X again on Tuesday after the court authorization. Musk had criticized de Moraes, comparing him to Voldemort and calling him a “fake” judge. The court had also frozen X’s business accounts in Brazil, along with those of SpaceX-owned Starlink. X stated that giving Brazilians access to their platform was important, and they will continue to defend freedom of speech within the boundaries of the law. The return of X to Brazil marks a resolution to a contentious dispute that has lasted for months.
