Two Rhode Island teenagers recently made a significant impact on Armenia by introducing the sport of lacrosse to the country. The two teens, Simon Magakian and Caleb Gershengorn, both 16 years old, traveled to Armenia to share their love for the sport and to teach local youth how to play.
The idea to bring lacrosse to Armenia stemmed from Magakian’s connection to the country – his father is originally from Armenia. The teens were supported by the international organization Lacrosse the Nations, which aims to bring the sport to underserved communities around the world.
During their time in Armenia, Magakian and Gershengorn spent two weeks teaching lacrosse to over 100 children in the cities of Yerevan and Gyumri. They provided equipment and instruction to the kids, many of whom had never heard of the sport before. The teens also organized a friendly lacrosse tournament, which garnered a lot of interest and participation from the local community.
Their efforts were met with great enthusiasm and gratitude from the Armenian children and families. Gershengorn described the experience as “unbelievable” and said that he was inspired by the positive impact they were able to make through the sport of lacrosse.
The success of Magakian and Gershengorn’s initiative in Armenia highlights the power of sports in bridging cultural gaps and bringing communities together. By introducing lacrosse to a new audience, the two teens have not only expanded the reach of the sport but also created lasting connections and memories for the youth in Armenia. Their story serves as a testament to the transformative potential of sports in creating positive change in the world.
