Two people died and more than two dozen were treated after a hydrogen sulfide leak at a Pemex facility in Deer Park, a Houston suburb. The leak occurred while workers were working on a flange, causing 35 employees to be either transported or treated on site. A shelter-in-place order was issued and then lifted after air monitoring reports found no hazardous pollutants. Pemex stated that the incident was contained and isolated to their site, with no offsite impact on air quality. The facility is co-located at a Shell refinery site, and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality is aware of the incident. Houston, known as the petrochemical heartland of the country, houses a cluster of refineries and plants. Multiple ambulances and emergency vehicles were seen at the scene, highlighting the seriousness of the situation. The city of Deer Park urged nearby residents to stay inside and close doors and windows as a precaution. The incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with industrial chemical leaks in heavily industrialized areas like Houston.
