Former Marine Paul Whelan expressed his devastation when he learned that WNBA star Brittney Griner was being released from Russian detention while he remained imprisoned. He recounted his experience in a recent interview with NBC News, revealing that the news came as a blow to him. The U.S. had traded Griner’s release for convicted Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout, leaving Whelan behind.
During his time in Russian prison, Whelan maintained his spirits by singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” every morning for five years. He described the harsh conditions of his imprisonment, including being pressured to confess to espionage and living on meager rations.
Whelan was finally released in a prisoner exchange that also freed journalists and another former Marine. He recounted his journey back to the U.S., noting the emotional moment when President Biden welcomed him home and pinned a flag pin on his jacket.
Now back in Michigan, Whelan is adjusting to life after his traumatic ordeal. He is dealing with medical and dental issues, as well as potential post-traumatic stress disorder. While grateful for the support of his community, Whelan is concerned about finding employment at his age.
Reflecting on his experience, Whelan emphasized the importance of strong diplomacy with leaders like Vladimir Putin and the need for the U.S. to stand firm against rogue nations. Despite his hardships, Whelan remained resilient and determined not to give in to despair, ready to rebuild his life in the aftermath of his long captivity.
