Hurricane Oscar made landfall on the northern coast of east Cuba with maximum sustained winds near 80 mph. The compact but powerful Category 1 storm prompted hurricane warnings for the provinces of Holguin and Guantanamo. It is expected to weaken after moving across eastern Cuba and accelerate northeastward across the central Bahamas. Cuba was already dealing with power outages following three major grid failures, and was bracing for impact with storm warnings and watches. Eastern Cuba is expected to experience hurricane conditions and heavy rainfall, with up to 15 inches in some areas. The southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos may also receive significant rainfall. Storm surge of 1 to 3 feet is expected along Cuba’s north shore. Residents in the affected areas should take precautions and monitor updates from the National Hurricane Center.
