Israel claims to have eliminated Hezbollah official poised to become group’s next leader

Israel confirmed that it had killed Hashem Safieddine, the Hezbollah official expected to succeed Hassan Nasrallah as the group’s leader, in an airstrike outside Beirut. Safieddine was killed in an attack on Hezbollah’s intelligence headquarters in Dahieh, along with other senior members. Israel’s escalating offensive in Lebanon has resulted in the deaths of numerous Hezbollah leaders, leaving the group in disarray. Safieddine, who also sat on Hezbollah’s Jihad Council overseeing military operations, was seen as a key figure in the organization and was designated a terrorist by the U.S. in 2017.

The confirmation of Safieddine’s death came while Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in Israel, discussing efforts to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza and deter further aggression from Iran. Israel recently killed Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, opening up opportunities for peace talks and the release of hostages in Gaza. Blinken reaffirmed the U.S.’ commitment to Israel’s security and discussed increasing humanitarian aid to Gaza amid warnings of severe hunger levels.

The U.S. delegation’s departure was briefly disrupted by rocket fire from Hezbollah in Tel Aviv, which was intercepted by Israel. The U.S. and Israeli officials emphasized the importance of ending the fighting in Gaza and Lebanon, securing the release of hostages, and preventing further aggression from Iran.
