Minneapolis police investigate possible connection between two deadly shootings at homeless camps, leaving 3 dead

Two weekend shootings at Minneapolis homeless encampments left three people dead and three others wounded, with police suspecting a connection between the incidents. The first shooting occurred early Saturday morning, resulting in one death and two injuries. The second shooting took place on Sunday afternoon, resulting in two deaths and one critical injury. Police have not ruled out the possibility that the two shootings are related. While three men were initially detained in connection to the Sunday shooting, they were later cleared and released. No arrests have been made in the case yet.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey attributed the increase in violence near homeless encampments to the prevalence of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. Fentanyl was responsible for a significant portion of drug overdose deaths in 2023. The victims of the weekend shootings have been identified as Deven Leonard Caston, Louis Lemons Jr., and Christopher Washington, all of whom died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara described the shootings as “outrageous” and emphasized the need for residents of encampments to accept available resources to address factors contributing to violence, such as narcotics and mental health issues. O’Hara stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of all individuals, regardless of their living situation.
