Five states, Iowa, Kansas, Nevada, Oregon, and Rhode Island, have joined the rest of the country in starting the early voting process for the 2024 election. This brings the total to 49 states and Washington, D.C., that have begun early voting. Nevada, in particular, is a crucial battleground state with only six electoral votes at stake.
Known for its “Reid Machine,” Nevada has traditionally voted for Democrats in presidential elections. However, the state has become more competitive, with Republicans making gains in recent years. The Senate race in Nevada is also heated, with Democrat Sen. Jacky Rosen seeking re-election against Republican Army veteran Sam Brown.
In Iowa, voters are heading to the polls, a state that has seen a shift towards supporting Republicans in recent years. Key downballot races are also taking place in battleground House districts in Iowa, Nevada, Oregon, and Kansas.
Each state has its own guidelines for registration and early voting, with deadlines for absentee ballot requests and voter registration. Overall, more states are starting or expanding their early voting programs this week, giving voters the opportunity to cast their ballots ahead of Election Day.
