The state weather agency declared a red alert in Valencia, where nearly 8 inches of rainfall disrupted transportation infrastructure. This is the deadliest flooding in Spain since 1996, when 87 people died in a similar event near the Pyrenees mountains. The town of Chiva, near Valencia, received an entire year’s worth of rain, over 19 inches, in just eight hours. The situation remains dire as emergency services work to rescue people and assess the extent of the damage caused by the severe weather.
