Monkeys break free from Alpha Genesis research facility in South Carolina

A search is underway in South Carolina after 40 monkeys escaped from a research facility in Yemassee, Beaufort County. The facility, Alpha Genesis, specializes in nonhuman primate products and bio-research services. Police have set up traps and are using thermal imaging cameras to recapture the animals. Residents are advised to keep doors and windows secured to prevent the monkeys from entering homes, and to call 911 if they spot one. The company works with macaque and capuchin monkeys for clinical trials on brain disease disorder treatments. It is unclear what trials the escaped monkeys were involved in, or if they were exposed to any diseases. Alpha Genesis has a contract to oversee a colony of 3,500 monkeys on Morgan Island, known as Monkey Island. Primate escapes have occurred in the area before, with incidents in May 2022 and in 2016 when 19 monkeys got loose before being recaptured. Another incident in 2022 saw three monkeys escape after a traffic accident in rural Pennsylvania. Alpha Genesis did not respond to requests for comment.

A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley has found that a lack of sleep can lead to increased feelings of loneliness and social isolation. The study, which was published in the journal Nature Communications, involved monitoring the brain activity of 18 young adults while they viewed images of strangers with neutral facial expressions.

The participants were asked to rate how lonely they felt before and after viewing the images, and the researchers found that those who had experienced sleep deprivation reported feeling significantly more lonely after viewing the images than those who had gotten a full night’s rest. The study also found that sleep-deprived individuals showed increased activity in the brain regions associated with social rejection and social isolation.

These findings have important implications for public health, as loneliness and social isolation have been linked to a number of negative health outcomes, including increased risk of heart disease, depression, and premature death. The researchers suggest that promoting healthy sleep habits could be an effective way to combat feelings of loneliness and improve overall well-being.

Lead author of the study, Dr. Eti Ben Simon, emphasized the importance of getting an adequate amount of sleep in order to maintain positive social connections and mental health. “Our findings highlight the importance of sleep in maintaining healthy social relationships and suggest that sleep deprivation may exacerbate feelings of loneliness and social isolation,” Dr. Ben Simon said.

This study adds to a growing body of research highlighting the importance of sleep for overall health and well-being. By prioritizing healthy sleep habits, individuals may be able to improve their social connections and reduce feelings of loneliness.
