Providence Defeats Hampton in Nonconference Showdown
Providence College secured a hard-fought victory over Hampton University, winning 60-51 in a nonconference basketball matchup on Tuesday in Rhode Island. The Friars improved their record to 3-0, overcoming a 30-22 deficit at halftime with impressive offensive spurts.
Jayden Pierre and Bensley Joseph each contributed 13 points, while Wesley Cardet added 10 points and six rebounds. Joseph also showcased his playmaking skills with five assists, helping Providence rally in the second half. Big runs of 8-2, 7-0, and 5-0 allowed Providence to take control, shifting the momentum and establishing a 42-36 lead.
Hampton, now 1-2, relied heavily on Noah Farrakhan, who led all scorers with 16 points off the bench. Despite falling behind early, the Pirates responded with a 16-0 run, momentarily shifting the game in their favor. Trevor Smith also made an impact with 11 points, scoring three of his shots from beyond the arc.
The Friars wrested back control when forward Corey Floyd’s putback and a Joseph three-pointer kickstarted a crucial 7-0 run. With 5:43 remaining, Floyd’s running dunk propelled Providence to a 49-47 lead, a margin they would not relinquish. Late-game free throws by Joseph and an essential three-pointer from Cardet sealed the victory.
Despite a subpar performance at the foul line, hitting only 10 of 20, Providence’s resilience and teamwork proved pivotal in their win. The Friars were particularly troubled by turnovers, with nine in the first half, but demonstrated remarkable resolve in the second half to secure the win. The triumph sets a positive tone for the season ahead as Providence builds momentum.
