Weather conditions on Tuesday triggered red flag warnings in the Northeast, with dry and windy conditions in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. A historic drought is affecting much of the region, with New Jersey facing extreme drought in three counties. In response to the conditions, Amtrak suspended services between New York and New Haven due to a brush fire causing power outages. Firefighters in New Jersey and New York were battling a wildfire in Passaic and Orange counties, with the Jennings Creek Wildfire reaching 3,500 acres and threatening residential structures.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a statewide burn ban and urged caution with outdoor activities that could spark fires. The fall has been particularly dry, leading to an increase in wildfires. In Massachusetts, numerous brush fires were burning, with 247 fires across the state this month alone. In California, the Mountain Fire in Ventura County had burned over 20,000 acres and was 54% contained. The fire had destroyed over 200 structures and injured six people.
Despite a wind event forecasted for the week, officials were confident that the fire was under control and residents should not be overly concerned. Firefighters had made significant progress in containing the Mountain Fire since it started on November 6. Residents may see flare-ups and dust from the fire, but officials assured that the situation was under control.
