The race for Woonsocket mayor is heating up as incumbent Christopher Beauchamp and City Council President John Ward face off. The main point of contention between the candidates is their relationship with former Mayor Lisa Baldelli-Hunt, who resigned amid a land deal scandal. Beauchamp, who succeeded Baldelli-Hunt, praised her leadership despite the controversy. Ward, on the other hand, believes Beauchamp is still tied to the old administration.
The mayoral candidates agree on issues like addressing drug addiction and homelessness in the city, as well as the need to improve education and stimulate economic development. Both support a ballot question for four-year mayoral terms with term limits and revising council representation to be more localized.
During a recent debate hosted by WPRI-TV 12, Beauchamp declared support for Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election, while Ward stated he had not made a decision. The debate will air on Fox Providence and WPRI, with the general election scheduled for November 5th and early voting beginning on October 16th.
The city of Woonsocket faces challenges such as financial debt, substance abuse issues, and the aftermath of Baldelli-Hunt’s tenure. Both candidates are hopeful for the city’s future and believe in the potential to turn things around. The outcome of the mayoral race will determine the direction the city takes in addressing these pressing issues.
