URI Community Mourns the Loss of Maureen McDermott
Kingston, RI – The University of Rhode Island (URI) community is reeling from the tragic news of the passing of Maureen McDermott, the director of student involvement and the Memorial Union. McDermott, who served the university for 43 years, died on November 15 as a result of injuries sustained in a vehicle-pedestrian accident earlier in the month.
Joining URI in 1981 as a major events coordinator, McDermott soon found her true passion within student involvement. Throughout her tenure, she became a beloved figure among staff, faculty, and students alike, dedicating herself to the success of over 100 campus organizations. Her legacy as a compassionate advisor and advocate for students has had a profound impact on the university community, inspiring both achievement and connectedness among her peers.
A proud URI parent, McDermott frequently attended sporting events with her husband, Paul, and cherished the accomplishments of their three sons, all URI graduates. Her radiant smile and unwavering commitment to the university and its students have left an indelible mark on the campus.
In response to the emotional toll of this loss, URI has made various support resources available to students and staff, including counseling services, health services, and the Dean of Students Office. Ellen Reynolds, Vice President for Student Affairs, emphasized the importance of supporting each other during this challenging time and extended heartfelt condolences to McDermott’s family, friends, and colleagues.
Maureen McDermott’s contributions to URI will be remembered fondly, as her dedication and spirit continue to inspire future generations. The URI community is encouraged to come together, reflecting on her legacy and supporting one another in their grief.
