The remains of a car that exploded in Sevastopol, killing a Russian naval officer, have sparked further tensions in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The incident, which involved the use of a new experimental hypersonic missile by Russia, prompted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to warn of a severe escalation of the conflict.
Zelensky accused Russia of having no interest in peace and called for pressure to be exerted on Russia to find a real peace through strength. The use of the Oreshnik missile, which has a range of over 3,400 miles and can carry nuclear warheads, was seen as a significant escalation by NATO and Ukraine.
In response to Russia’s actions, NATO and Ukraine are set to meet in Brussels next week to discuss Moscow’s use of the missile. Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that the missile travelled at 10 times the speed of sound, making it difficult to intercept and allowing Russia to strike most of Europe and the west coast of the United States.
The United States and Britain allowing Ukraine to use their weapons to strike Russia was cited by Putin as the reason for Russia’s aggressive actions. The use of hypersonic missiles and intercontinental ballistic missiles by Russia in the conflict has raised concerns of further escalation and potential global implications. Zelensky condemned Russia’s actions, calling them those of an “insane neighbor” and accusing Russia of searching the world for more weapons. The situation remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of the ongoing conflict.
