More than 120 countries belonging to the International Criminal Court are now obligated to enforce arrest warrants issued against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant for suspected war crimes in Gaza. Despite Israel not recognizing the ICC’s authority and the fugitives not planning to turn themselves in, the pair’s options are shrinking as many countries have committed to enforcing the warrants.
International human rights lawyer Jonathan Kuttab emphasized that countries are legally bound to abide by the ICC’s decisions, and many of Israel’s allies, including the European Union, have indicated their support for the arrest warrants. Netanyahu has dismissed the charges as anti-Semitic.
The Rome Statute, the treaty establishing the ICC, includes 124 state parties worldwide, and the list of countries where Netanyahu and Gallant could potentially be detained post-ICC’s decision is extensive.
With the potential for arrest looming in numerous countries, Netanyahu and Gallant’s legal battles could become increasingly complicated despite Israel’s attempts to brush off the charges. The ICC’s move has significant implications for international law and human rights, elevating the importance of accountability and justice for war crimes.
