Rhode Island FC Makes History, Advances to USL Championship Final
Rhode Island FC has made an impressive entrance into the USL Championship Final, marking a first in the club’s history. The expansion team has achieved this milestone by defeating three of the Eastern Conference’s top four seeds on the road. They are set to face the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, the No. 2 seed from the Western Conference, on November 23 at Weidner Field in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Both teams will be making their debut in the Championship Final, with the Switchbacks looking for their first-ever trophy following a narrow 1-0 win against the Las Vegas Lights FC in the Western Conference Finals. Previously, they were defeated in the 2022 Western Conference Finals by San Antonio FC.
Rhode Island FC has impressed during its inaugural USL Championship season, becoming just the second team to win at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium by beating the Charleston Battery 2-1 in the Eastern Conference Quarterfinals. They followed this with a dominant 3-0 victory over league leaders Louisville City FC, securing the team’s only shutout loss at home this season.
The upcoming match provides a historical opportunity for Rhode Island FC to become the first expansion club to win the Championship Final since Sporting Kansas City II in 2016 and only the second overall, following Sacramento Republic FC’s success in 2014.
The final will be broadcast on CBS, TUDN, and SiriusXM, with radio coverage on 790 The Score. Fans in Rhode Island can join an official watch party at Moonshine Alley in Providence as they rally behind their team.
