James Craig, a Colorado dentist accused of fatally poisoning his wife’s protein shakes, is facing new charges related to alleged efforts to kill a detective involved in the case. Craig, 46, was charged with solicitation to commit first-degree murder last week in addition to the first-degree murder charge he already faces in the death of his wife, Angela Craig, 43. He has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.
Records obtained by KUSA show that Craig was in jail with the man he allegedly solicited to murder the detective twice in 2023. The detective targeted in the alleged plot had worked on Angela Craig’s death investigation. Authorities have accused James Craig of poisoning his wife’s drink with cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, leading to her death in March 2023.
Investigators initially believed her death was due to poisoning by arsenic and cyanide, but the county coroner later attributed it to a combination of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline. Evidence such as Craig’s internet search history and online purchases, including cyanide, have been presented in the case.
Craig’s defense lawyer withdrew from the case just before the solicitation charge was filed, citing a professional conflict. Jury selection was delayed indefinitely as a result. The lawyer had previously stated that there was no direct evidence linking Craig to his wife’s poisoning. The police have not provided additional details about the new allegations.
