Providence College Women’s Basketball team secured a thrilling 55-54 victory over previously unbeaten San Diego State on the final day of the Cancun Challenge. Grace Efosa’s two free throws in the final seconds sealed the win for the Friars, improving their record to 4-5. The game started with San Diego State taking an early lead, but Providence responded with a run to claim the lead by the end of the first quarter. They maintained their advantage throughout the game, despite SDSU’s attempts to close the gap.
Key players for Providence included Grace Efosa, who led the team in scoring with 14 points and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Emily Archibald recorded her first double-double of her career with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Brynn Farrell and MacKayla Scarlett also made significant contributions to the win.
This victory marked San Diego State’s first loss of the season, as they had entered the game with a perfect 8-0 record. Providence’s ability to close out games in tight situations was evident, as they have played multiple games decided by single digits this season.
Next, the Friars will face intrastate rival Rhode Island on December 4 at the Ryan Center in Kingston, Rhode Island. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+. Providence will look to carry their momentum from the Cancun Challenge win into this upcoming matchup.
