From Boots to Bushels: Farmer Training in New England – Featured in Rhody Today

The University of Rhode Island’s Boots to Bushels program, aimed at connecting military veterans and beginning farmers with opportunities in agriculture, is now accepting applications for its second year. The nine-month program offers online classes and farm tours to help participants build sustainable farm businesses and connect with agricultural resources. The winter program, starting in January, is open for registration until Dec. 31.

Led by program director Tricia Lourenco Boucher, a military veteran, the program has expanded to include beginning farmers and underserved populations. Air Force veteran Jonathan George is one participant in the upcoming session. The program includes classes taught by agricultural experts from organizations such as Pasa Sustainable Agriculture and Land for Good, with optional farm tours in the spring and summer.

Scholarships are available for veterans with limited resources. The program aims to provide veterans and beginning farmers with the skills needed for success in farming while also supporting the local food system. Applications for the program are due by Dec. 31, with classes starting in January. For more information or to apply, visit the program’s website.
