A woman has died and a man was seriously injured after they were rescued from a burning home in Wakefield, Massachusetts early Sunday morning. Firefighters received 911 calls reporting an explosion at the six-family dwelling on Water Street. The woman later died from her injuries at Massachusetts General Hospital, while the man is expected to survive. Several neighbors witnessed the fire and hoped for a better outcome, including one resident who saw first responders trying to resuscitate the woman on the front lawn. The fire department confirmed that smoking materials and home oxygen equipment were found in the area where the fire started on the third floor. The blaze was brought under control in 30 minutes with the assistance of neighboring fire departments. Displaced residents are receiving assistance from The Red Cross and the Wakefield Office of Emergency Management. Fire officials are reminding everyone that smoking near home oxygen equipment can be especially dangerous and can easily cause fires to spread. The fire has been determined to not be intentionally set. This tragic event has deeply impacted the community, with the Fire Chief expressing condolences to the family of the victim.
