The King and Queen of Spain presided over a ceremony held in the cathedral of Valencia to honor the victims of the tragic floods that occurred in October. The ceremony was attended by high-ranking Spanish politicians including the First Deputy Prime Minister, the Minister of Finance, and the Minister of Science, among others. Spanish President Pedro Sánchez was notably absent from the event.
The funeral, organized by the Archbishopric, was attended by 400 relatives of the victims who were provided a space in the central nave of the building. The mayors of affected municipalities and the president of the Valencian Community were also present to pay their respects.
However, the funeral was not without controversy as some of the victims’ loved ones criticized politicians for using the event to “clean up” their image following criticism of their management of the disaster. Some relatives even called the politicians “murderers” outside the cathedral.
The memorial service was led by the Archbishop of Valencia and attended by parish priests, Valencian bishops, the Episcopal Council, and the Cathedral Chapter. After listening to a hymn, the King and Queen of Spain offered condolences to the families of the victims.
The ceremony served as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of the floods that killed over 200 people and caused widespread destruction in the affected areas. The presence of the royal couple and high-ranking politicians highlighted the importance of honoring and remembering those who lost their lives in the tragedy.
