Mother in Attleboro bravely shares her thoughts following teacher’s arrest for son’s misconduct.

An Attleboro mother, Joy Whitfield, spoke out after her 5-year-old son, Preston, was allegedly assaulted by his special education teacher, Susan Martin, at Thacher Elementary School. Martin has been charged with two counts of assault and battery on a person with an intellectual disability for allegedly slapping two students, including Preston, during separate incidents in her classroom. Whitfield, in an exclusive interview with NBC 10, expressed shock and heartbreak over the situation. She described the difficulty of learning about the incidents and the impact it has had on her son, who is nonverbal and autistic.

Whitfield’s trust in the school system has been shaken, leading her to remove Preston from the school. Superintendent David Sawyer stated that the situation is being taken seriously and they are cooperating with law enforcement. Whitfield hopes for justice for her son and the other victims, emphasizing the need for a safe learning environment. Martin was arraigned and released on personal recognizance with restrictions on contact with victims and children under 16. Whitfield is determined to seek justice and raise awareness about the importance of protecting vulnerable children in educational settings.
