During a recent basketball game between BYU and Providence, the Providence student section chanted offensive remarks about members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which owns BYU. A video of the chant was shared on social media by a BYU fan in attendance. Providence Athletic Director Steven Napolillo issued an apology to BYU, stating that the chants were unacceptable and do not represent Providence College’s values. This incident occurred during BYU’s first trip to Providence since 1981, with Providence winning the game 83-64 as part of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle. This is not the first time BYU has faced offensive chants, with similar incidents happening during football games at USC in 2021 and Oregon in 2022. BYU basketball’s next road game is against nationally ranked Houston on January 4. Mitch Harper, a BYU Insider for KSLsports.com, covers BYU’s journey in the Big 12 Conference.
