Captain Cook statue in Sydney vandalized before Australia Day

A statue of British explorer James Cook in Sydney was vandalized with red paint and damaged just before Australia’s national day. This was the second time the statue had been defaced in the last year, and police have launched an investigation into the incident. Local councillor Carolyn Martin described the vandalism as an “absolute mess,” with paint splattered all over the statue and parts of it broken off.

For many Indigenous Australians, Australia Day symbolizes Invasion Day, representing the destruction of their cultures by European settlers. Indigenous groups have called for the celebration to be dropped or the date to be moved, as it marks the anniversary of the arrival of the British First Fleet in 1788. Every year on January 26, protests are held against the mistreatment of Indigenous people, who are the most disadvantaged group in the country by many measures.

A survey by the Sydney Morning Herald showed that support for keeping January 26 as Australia’s national day has increased to 61% from 47% over the past two years, indicating a shift in sentiment among voters. The debate over Australia Day highlights the ongoing tensions between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and the need for reconciliation and recognition of the country’s complex colonial history.
