Families in Gaza mourn as they recover bodies of loved ones from under rubble, bringing fresh waves of grief.

Following a deadly offensive by Israel in Gaza’s southern city of Khan Younis, families gathered outside the Nasser Hospital to mourn over their loved ones whose remains were pulled from the rubble of homes and buildings. The ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas resulted in hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians returning to find their neighborhoods destroyed. As of now, over 47,000 people have been killed in Gaza, although officials warn that the death toll may be higher once bodies buried in the rubble are accounted for.

The Civil Defense Agency reported that the bodies of 162 people have been found since the ceasefire, with fears that thousands more may still be buried under rubble. Limited resources and heavy equipment are hindering recovery efforts. In Rafah, drone footage showed widespread devastation with homes reduced to rubble for miles. The devastation has been compared to that of Hiroshima or Nagasaki by residents like Walid Abu Libdeh.

Despite the ceasefire, the emotional toll on families is evident as they search for their loved ones amongst the destruction. Rows of body bags lay on the ground outside the hospital, with some bearing names and details of the deceased, while others remained unidentified. The tragic scenes of mourning and devastation in Gaza paint a grim picture of the consequences of the conflict between Israel and Hamas.
