Israel targets southern Lebanon; Netanyahu insists army will not withdraw by Sunday | Israeli military operations in Lebanon continue

Israeli forces are set to withdraw from southern Lebanon in accordance with a ceasefire deal with Hezbollah, but issues have arisen. The Israeli army has not fully withdrawn yet, claiming the agreement has not been fully enforced by Lebanon. This comes after reports of military raids in southern Lebanese towns, causing damage and destruction. Israel is seeking ways to extend the deadline for withdrawal, citing the slow deployment of the Lebanese army, which has allowed Hezbollah to regroup. Former defence minister Benny Gantz has called for continued military operations against any violations by Hezbollah. While Israeli forces have withdrawn from some parts of southern Lebanon, they are reportedly preparing to maintain positions in the eastern region. Lebanese residents have returned to devastated villages in the south, with the town of Naqoura described as a “disaster zone” by the mayor. Reconstruction efforts are expected to be lengthy, as the town lacks resources following years of economic crisis. Overall, tensions remain high as both sides navigate the terms of the ceasefire agreement and the aftermath of the conflict.
