NTSB Washington briefing provides initial data on fatal midair collision in Washington

In a tragic incident near Reagan National Airport, a passenger jet collided with an Army helicopter, resulting in the deaths of everyone on board both aircraft. According to National Transportation Safety Board Investigator Brice Banning, the American Airlines jet was “beginning to increase its pitch” just before impact, as captured by flight data and cockpit voice recorders.

There is a discrepancy in the initial information released regarding the altitudes of both aircraft, with the passenger jet’s flight data recorder showing it at 325 feet and the radar display in the control tower showing the helicopter lower at 200 feet. Among the victims were two coaches, two athletes, and two parents from the Skating Club of Boston, including 16-year-old skater Spencer Lane, his mother Christine Lane, 13-year-old Jinna Han, and her mother Jin Han. Also killed was 42-year-old Chris Collins, a former North Attleborough school teacher.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with details emerging about the moments leading up to the tragedy.
