The University of Rhode Island (URI) has given its fans an early present this holiday season, with impressive performances from both the basketball and football teams. The Rams basketball team has started the season with a 9-0 record, their best start in 76 years, and continued their success with a record of 11-1 going into the holiday break. However, the team faced their first loss of the season to Brown University, who delivered a thrilling 84-80 victory.
On the football field, URI made history with their best season ever, finishing with an 11-3 record, a share of the Coastal Athletic Association championship, and a spot in the FCS playoffs. The team’s success led to multiple All-CAA recognitions and a coach of the year nod for Jim Fleming.
Other notable achievements in Rhode Island sports include the Providence College men’s soccer team making it to the Big East final and the NCAA Tournament, as well as the Rhode Island FC’s impressive run to the final game of the United Soccer League Championship in their inaugural season.
The community also came together to support URI football star Marquis Buchanan and his family after a fire damaged their home in Providence. A GoFundMe appeal organized by Buchanan’s sister raised over $50,000 to help them secure a new apartment and replace what was lost in the fire. The outpouring of support from URI coaches, staff, former players, and fans allowed the Buchanan family to start over without financial worries.
As the holiday season approaches, these stories of success, resilience, and community support serve as a reminder of the true spirit of giving and coming together to support one another. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!
