Learn from World Cancer Day: How Lifestyle Plays a Vital Role in Cancer Prevention | Latest Health Updates

World Cancer Day is observed annually on February 4th to raise awareness about cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. This year, Dr. Shubham Garg, Director of Surgical Oncology at Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, highlighted the crucial role of lifestyle choices in preventing cancer.

According to Dr. Garg, maintaining a nutritious diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can help protect against various types of cancer. On the other hand, processed foods, red meats, and sugary beverages have been linked to an increased risk of cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.

Regular physical exercise is also essential in reducing the risk of cancer, such as breast, colorectal, and endometrial cancer. Engaging in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity per week can help reduce inflammation, balance hormones, and improve overall well-being.

Furthermore, avoiding tobacco and alcohol consumption plays a crucial role in cancer prevention. Tobacco use is the leading cause of cancer globally, while heavy alcohol consumption has been linked to liver, breast, and esophageal cancers.

Excess exposure to UV rays from the sun can increase the risk of skin cancer, such as melanoma. Using sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, and avoiding prolonged sun exposure can help prevent skin damage and reduce the risk of skin cancer.

Stress management and mental well-being are also important factors in cancer prevention, as long-term stress and mental health issues can weaken the immune system and lead to unhealthy coping mechanisms. Engaging in stress-relieving activities like meditation, yoga, and social interaction can improve overall well-being and reduce cancer risk.

By embracing a healthy lifestyle through proper nutrition, regular exercise, avoiding harmful substances, protecting against sun exposure, and managing stress, individuals can significantly reduce their risk of developing cancer. Collaboration within communities to promote prevention strategies is essential in the ongoing battle against cancer.
