Rhode Island rated as 5th most affordable state for middle-class earners.

Middle-class families in the U.S. are facing increasing financial pressures due to rising costs for essential living expenses like housing, healthcare, childcare, and transportation. A new report examines where middle-class families in the U.S. can achieve the most financial security by comparing the income required to cover essential expenses to the median family income in each location. Counterintuitively, some of the most expensive cities in the U.S., such as San Jose, Washington, D.C., and Seattle, are where middle-class families have the most available income after covering necessities due to higher median incomes. On the other hand, cities like Los Angeles rank poorly due to high costs and lower-than-expected incomes for middle-class families.

States like Maryland, New Jersey, and Massachusetts lead the nation in offering middle-class families the most financial flexibility, while states like California, New York, West Virginia, Wyoming, and New Mexico face challenges due to stagnant wages or disproportionately high living costs. The analysis was performed by Upgraded Points using data from the Economic Policy Institute and the U.S. Census Bureau.
