Deloitte Donates $5M to Help Rhode Island Recover from Ransomware Attack

After a ransomware attack on Rhode Island’s health and social services system, Governor Dan McKee announced that Deloitte, the state’s vendor for the RIBridge system, will provide $5 million to help cover recovery costs. The attack, discovered in December, exposed the personal data of Rhode Islanders on the dark web, including Social Security numbers and financial information. Deloitte’s contribution will support approximately 2,000 HealthSource RI customers impacted by the breach who enrolled in coverage for January and February. The funds will also cover expenses such as a data breach call center, credit monitoring, and identity protection for affected individuals. The attack affected various state benefit programs, including HealthSource RI, which worked with insurance providers to offer assistance. Now, as the RIBridges system undergoes a phased relaunch, customers can access the HealthyRhode portal to manage their accounts and submit applications. Governor McKee expressed gratitude for Deloitte’s financial support in light of the unexpected breach expenses.
