Detroit Police report two children tragically pass away in van from cold while sleeping

Two children, ages 2 and 9, died of suspected exposure to the cold after being found unresponsive in a van where their family was living in Detroit. The tragic incident occurred when their mother discovered them not breathing and called for help. The mother had parked the van at a casino parking garage during a night with temperatures as low as 12 degrees. The children were separately taken to a hospital where they were pronounced dead, believed to have frozen to death.

Three other children survived, and an investigation by the police department is ongoing. Detroit police Capt. Nathan Duda expressed the need to examine the circumstances surrounding the deaths, despite the tragedy. He emphasized the importance of seeking help from shelters, churches, or other facilities during extreme weather conditions and urged people to call 911 if they see someone in need.

Duda, a father himself, expressed his sadness and empathy for the family’s loss. He emphasized the community’s willingness to provide resources, transportation, food, clothing, and shelter to those in need during cold weather. The incident serves as a reminder of the dangers of exposure to extreme cold and the importance of reaching out for help when needed.
