Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education Angélica Infante-Green outlined the steps the state is taking to return control of Providence’s public schools to the city at an event on Monday. The state could relinquish control as soon as summer 2026, a year earlier than expected, if all conditions are met. The event, held at the National Blue Ribbon Award-winning Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary School, also served as the backdrop for the release of the “Path to Local Control” framework. However, city officials, including the mayor and City Council members, were not invited or briefed on the framework, sparking controversy.
The mayor’s office stated that most of the framework’s conditions were not new and had been previously discussed. Infante-Green defended the state’s takeover, emphasizing improvements in areas such as chronic absenteeism and technical education enrollment. The event concluded with a tense moment as reporters questioned Infante-Green and the press conference was cut short to allow for school dismissal.
