Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi expressed concern for the homeless population during the opening of ECHO Village, a new pallet shelter in Providence, Rhode Island. He highlighted the tragic death of Rico Timez Ramy, a homeless individual who froze to death last month. Shekarchi emphasized the need for more support and assistance for those experiencing homelessness.
ECHO Village consists of 45 small, one-room structures on state-owned land and aims to provide shelter and services for homeless individuals and couples. The village will offer around-the-clock services from House of Hope, a leading provider of services for homeless people in the state.
Despite delays and challenges, the shelter is finally opening its doors to individuals who will benefit from on-site case management, housing assistance, job training, and health-related services. Providence Mayor Brett Smiley called on other municipalities in the state to follow suit and establish similar shelters to address the growing issue of homelessness.
Under Governor Dan McKee’s administration, the number of shelter beds for homeless individuals has increased, but more work needs to be done to support those in need. The opening of ECHO Village is seen as a step in the right direction, providing not just a roof but a path to dignity and change for the homeless population in Rhode Island.
