Federal Judge in Rhode Island Upholds Order Halting Trump Administration Funding Freeze
U.S. District Court Judge John McConnell has reaffirmed his decision to halt the Trump administration’s funding freeze, following the First Circuit Court of Appeals in Boston’s refusal to overturn his temporary restraining order. The lawsuit, led by over 20 state attorneys general including Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, challenged the administration’s freeze on funding for various programs nationwide.
McConnell’s initial temporary restraining order was followed by a subsequent order directing the administration to comply with it, noting that they had violated the order. In his latest decision, McConnell maintains his temporary restraining order and denies the administration’s request to withhold FEMA and other funding.
Notably, McConnell’s previous order allows the administration to limit access to federal funds based on applicable laws and regulations, without needing prior approval from the court. The judge’s decision reinforces the importance of following the law while also recognizing the administration’s authority to withhold funding under appropriate circumstances.
