The Catholic Athletic League is celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2025 by honoring individuals who have contributed significantly to the league’s success. A gala will be held on Oct. 18 to induct members into a newly established Hall of Fame. This event will serve as a fundraiser to support the league in its mission. Ben Gorewitz, the director of CAL, expressed the desire to pay tribute to those who have laid a strong foundation for youth sports in the diocese.
Nominations for the Hall of Fame can be made on the CAL website, and candidates must be Catholics in good standing. The criteria for selection include longevity of participation, positive impact, continued good work, professional athletic career, and the number of nominations received. The deadline for nominations is March 31, and additional information may be provided for posthumous candidates.
The Catholic Athletic League was founded in 1935 as the Catholic Youth Organization and has since expanded to include a variety of sports for young people in schools and parishes. The league saw significant growth in the early years, especially in basketball, which became a prominent sport. Despite facing challenges during World War II, CYO basketball continued to thrive in the post-war period. The program later expanded to include divisions for girls and younger boys, with more than 500 teams competing at its peak.
Today, CAL sports include cross country, tennis, cheerleading, volleyball, and soccer. Gorewitz aims to raise awareness among young people about the opportunities for involvement in sports during the 90th anniversary year of the Catholic Athletic League.
