In 1937, a Youth Administration Camp was opened at the former Kenyon House Hotel in Quonochontaug, hosting 40 young women for educational and vocational training. The camp offered classes in English, social science, home economics, and health, as well as recreational activities. The girls worked 54 hours per month, receiving five dollars in salary, room and board, clothes, and spending money. Only allowed one weekend home during the three-month program, girls had to meet certain criteria to be accepted, including being unemployed and financially needy. The camp, supervised by Marjorie A. Stone, had an all-female staff and three male support staff. Despite strict schedules and rules, the camp aimed to provide opportunities for financially struggling young women. Unfortunately, due to funding issues, the camp closed on June 3. The property was eventually sold and demolished, marking the end of this unique educational program.
